A New York woman has filed a personal injury lawsuit after requiring laparoscopic surgery to remove her Mirena IUD, which had migrated out of position.

On October 1, Kellie Fulkrod filed the Mirena lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, claiming that the company failed to provide adequate warning about potential risks and complications linked to their Mirena IUD.

According to her lawsuit (Case: 1:13-cv-07058), Ms. Fulkrod had Mirena implanted in 2002 or 2003. Though her doctors confirmed that Mirena was correctly positioned during placement checks, it was determined in 2007 that the device had perforated her uterus and migrated to her abdominal cavity. She had to undergo laparoscopic surgery in 2008 to have the device removed before it could cause further damage to her body.
