An inferior vena cava filter (IVC filter) is a type of vascular filter that is implanted by interventional radiologists or vascular surgeons into the inferior vena cava to presumably prevent life-threatening pulmonary emboli (PEs). They are small cage-like medical devices that work by capturing blood clots which restricts them from accessing the lungs.
There have been instances where these IVC filters have fallen out of place and broken inside patients at whom metal parts then move through the body damaging the heart, lungs, and cause internal bleeding. There are also reports of IVC filters causing blood clots at the location at which it was inserted, the same clotting it was supposed to prevent. Recent claims involving these filters state that manufacturers have failed to warn physicians and their patients of these potential risks.
