GM Accused of Concealing Information about Ignition Defect
The slurry of recalls came after the company was accused of mishandling an ignition switch defect that has been linked to 13 deaths. GM admitted to learning about the ignition switch problem in Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars more than ten years ago. But, despite its knowledge of the problem, the company didn’t recall the vehicles until this year.
The automaker’s failure to issue a recall and fix the problem when it was first discovered sparked an investigation into the automaker’s safety practices. Since then, the company has recalled millions of other popular vehicles for a broad range of problems, but so far only about a quarter of the recalled vehicles have been fixed.
According to CBS, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urged GM to speed up the production of parts to repair the defects and says it will take additional action if necessary.
