Zofran

Principal Law Group is currently handling lawsuits against dangerous drugs, including Zofran. Commonly prescribed for nausea and vomiting, studies and prior lawsuits have revealed that Zofran poses a number of risks to pregnant women and their babies. Furthermore, lawsuits allege that Zofran was marketed and sold by drugmaker GlaxoKlineSmith despite their knowledge of the risks to pregnant women and despite being unapproved by the FDA for use by pregnant women.

What is Zofran?

Zofran, or ondansetron, is most commonly prescribed and used as a treatment for nausea and vomiting. More specifically, Zofran is used alone or with other medications to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting associated with post-surgery medications or from chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Zofran is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to help cancer patients and other patients who have grown sick after taking post-op meds. Zofran is not FDA certified for use by pregnant women and has not been approved to treat morning sickness.

Zofran Injuries and Side Effects

In 2012, drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline pleaded guilty to federal charges of fraud and illegal promotion of several drugs, including Zofran. Lawsuits and court documents reveal that pregnant women were being prescribed Zofran as a treatment for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, without FDA approval.

Studies link Zofran to birth defects, with court documents showing that GlaxoKlineSmith knew as early as 1992 that Zofran can pass through the human placenta with the potential to harm developing babies. Several lawsuits have been filed; with claims that Glaxo fraudulently alleged that Zofran was safe for pregnant women. Other claims assert that Glaxo failed to warn the public about the dangerous side effects, and that data and safety information on Zofran for use in pregnant women was not properly evaluated. Furthermore, lawsuits claim that Glaxo marketed the drug to expectant mothers while also paying doctors to prescribe it.
